Wesley Guild

The Methodist Guild is the best-attended mid-week meeting of Windsor Methodist Church. Each Wednesday between October and Easter, starting at 7.45 pm, about forty or more people regularly meet as the Guild. So what attracts such a healthy membership?

In a nut-shell it is the hard work of the joint secretaries and the three main committees of the Guild. Together they create a real sense of fellowship within the Guild and encourage a deep sense of caring for each other.

The Devotional Committee continues this fellowship and caring by its programme and tries to understand the ways of God in the individual, the world and the Church. The Christian Service Committee concentrates on speakers who represent Christian Service of local and overseas concerns. The Cultural Committee promotes the wider field of subjects of general interest which are currently in fashion for today.

Other key activities for the Guild include a Holy Week Meditation, a Retreat Day and a Christmas Miscellany.

The Guild programme is an attractive and enriching one and not to be missed. So do think about joining us. The Guild has been in existence at Windsor Methodist Church for over a hundred years (so we must be doing something right) so by joining us you will keep a worthy tradition alive and in good heart.

Part of our Guild motto is “Everyone is welcome” – this includes you!

Ladies’ Club

The Windsor Methodist Church Ladies’ Club was started some 54 years ago, when a young Minister’s wife had a vision for young ladies’ to meet together just once a month for fellowship and fun, but also have a spiritual mission.  The wheels began to turn, and two members of the Church compiled a letter of invitation to every household on our membership list.  The outcome was received with enthusiasm and so the “Ladies’ Club” came into being.  The numbers grew; various outside voluntary opportunities were taken up including providing refreshments for the local hospital patients at King Edward VII hospital and becoming involved in the talking newspaper for the blind.  A variety of speakers, and other activities such as keep fit, was also introduced.  Our social activities were shared with Eton Wick Church and what fun we had, and it continues to this day.
It is still an open meeting to the people who come onto our premises.  However our average age has gone up considerably!  For example in 2008 we had two interesting outings; one to Waltham Place, a local organic garden, and another to Highgrove, the home of Prince Charles, where a conducted tour of the gardens was enjoyed.

Men’s Group

The Windsor Methodist Church Men’s Group - although the Church has had a regular Ladies’ Club, until Rev. David Smith instigated one, there has not been a Men’s Group in recent times.  Those who first constituted it would have wished it comprehensively to include those in employment.  The limited number for whom it would have been practical in an evening or weekend has confined it to those in various stages of retirement.  So it meets on the second Monday morning of each month in different members’ homes.  The host provides light refreshment and initiates an informal discussion on a subject of his choice.

It has proved to be a very stimulating gathering so that its members’ enthusiasm has ensured regular attendance of around ten members of diverse work and life experience.  It has been an especial benefit that David Smith has almost invariably been present.

It has been said that when men get together the conversation revolves around politics, religion and sex and so it has proved to be.  Such issues have been related to the role of faith in connection with them.  Conflict in the Holy Land, the Economic Crisis, Genetic Manipulation, Faith Schools, and some incorporation of Sharia Law into English Common Law have been among the political issues discussed.  The future of the Church, Patterns of Worship, Ecumenism and Inter-faith, and the inter-relation of ethics and religion have been religious matters under consideration.  With some of our children and grandchildren in relationships outside marriage, we have grappled with the nature of marriage in a world of readily available contraceptives and both partners in full-time employment.

Although there is often widespread agreement, we do not seek to reach unanimous conclusions.  We have all felt, however, that we have broadened and deepened our understanding of such issues and been enriched in our thinking by the different views exchanged.  The meetings have enhanced our ability to follow the great commandments – “to love God with all our minds” and “our neighbours as ourselves”.

Do come and have a cup of coffee and a chat on a Saturday morning from 10.30 till 12.00 at the Windsor Methodist Church. We are all very friendly and would love to meet you.

Bible Study & Lent Groups

The Windsor Methodist Church holds a Bible Study on a Monday afternoon and repeated on a Tuesday evening. If you would like to join please ask our Minister who will give you the timings etc.

Book Club

The Windsor Methodist Church book club has been running for just over two years, meeting every three months. There are about ten regular members, probably the limit for this type of group, as each member hosts the meetings in turn. Between us we have chosen a wide variety of books including:

    • The Woman in White, Wilkie Collins.
    • Saturday, Ian McEwan.
    • The Magic Toyshop, Angela Carter.
    • The Chrysalids, John Wyndham.
Everyone seems to enjoy the meetings, which are easy to arrange. If you enjoy reading and discussion, why not set up another group?

Flower Arranging

The Windsor Methodist Church is fortunate to have a group of six flower arrangers who take it in turns to arrange the altar flowers for our weekly services.  Members of the congregation sign up on the rota to donate money for the flowers each week, often to commemorate family birthdays or anniversaries.

For particular festivals such as Easter, Harvest or Christmas the church is filled with flowers; just a few weeks ago the entrance porch, foyer, staircase and Church were decorated with 21 floral arrangements. Wedding, christening and occasionally funeral flowers are also arranged by request.

We are always looking for other flower arrangers to join our happy band.
